In under a monthís time the 2018 Grand National kicks off with the three-day event at Aintree taking place between Thursday 12th to Saturday 14th April.  This will be the 171st running of the famous race.

The annual race held at the Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool is the most valuable jump race on the horse racing calendar throughout Europe.  This yearís prize fund is over £1 million.

This event is prominent in the British culture and receives huge interest up and down the country.  It even attracts a wide audience of people who donít normally watch or bet on horse racing during the rest of the year.  An estimated 500-600 million people watch the Grand National worldwide.

A total of 21 races will take place during the event, with the main event taking place at 5:15pm on Saturday 14th April.

As well as several races taking place over the course of three days there is plenty of other entertainment, including a Style Awards competition, live performances from TíPau and Gabrielle, and a parade of previous champions.

Another unique feature of the Grand National is that it contains much larger fences than those found on conventional National Hunt race tracks.  Add to that the 4 miles 514 yards distance and it makes it one of the ultimate tests for horses and jockeys.

On the opening of this competition, the latest odds on the Grand National have Total Recall and Blaklion as the 12/1 joint favourites with Betfair.  Blaklion had been the 8/1 favourite last year but finished way back in 4th place.  This British horse is heading into this yearís Grand National in stellar shape, and in excellent form too, and so is among the favourites again.  Other horses to keep an eye on in this yearís race are last yearís runner-up, Cause of Causes at 20/1, The Last Samuri at 16/1; Minella Rocco and Tiger Roll are both at 14/1, with Betfair.

At 14/1 starter, One For Arthur collected the £561,300 prize money last year, winning the Grand National by four-and-a-half-lengths ahead of Cause of Causes in second place.

As the 2018 Grand National is going to be popular among punters and novices alike, we expect many people to be interested. We have teamed up with Betfair to offer you the chance to win a £50 John Lewis or Waitrose voucher. Just answer the follwing question for a chance to win:

  • What's the connection between the Grand National and Pontin's Holiday Camps?

Know the answer?  In that case, send it to me by email to: ejm1485@gmail.com

by noon on Saturday 14th April to be in with a chance of winning. This competition is only open to members of the Naturally Horses email forum and only I shall see your answers and email addresses.

Best of luck everyone!

Liz :)
